Cleaning the terrazzo hallways of Near North Montessori School in Chicago’s Loop district used to be an exercise in patience and a major investment of resources. For years, building manager Rod Candelario’s maintenance crew hauled around heavy and awkward mops, buckets, and cleaning solutions and manually scrubbed the school’s five 150-foot hallways, each located on different floors. That all changed the day Candelario purchased a RazorÒ 20 BT automatic scrubber from Kent, which he says has improved his staff’s productivity, lowered his cleaning costs, and helped “achieve our goal of keeping the school safe and clean for the kids.”
Scrubber saves three hours a day in cleaning time
Candelario figures the battery-powered Razor 20 BT—with its variable speed traction drive system, onboard battery charger, and 10.5-gallon solution and recovery tank capacity—saves his staff about 40 minutes worth of cleaning time in each hallway. That’s more than three hours every day, which translates into more time to accomplish other maintenance tasks, such as cleaning the school’s windows and classrooms. In addition, Candelario says the small footprint helps the scrubber navigate through the school’s six-foot wide hallways, amongst its 500 students, or onto the elevator to each floor. The scrubber, he said, is truly a one-stop cleaning shop.
“We don’t use anything else to clean the floors,” Candelario said. “It does the cleaning job well and faster. You can tell the floor is cleaner than when we used to just mop.” The hallways weren’t dirty when the staff mopped them, but anyone who looked down the length of them would invariably see a dull spot that inadvertently had been missed. The offset scrub deck and skirt-free design of the Razor 20 BT ensure that, wall to wall, the entire floor is clean.
Floor-cleaning is “almost effortless”
Candelario discovered the Razor 20 BT scrubber when he visited an open house at Performance Chemical and Janitorial Supply in Richton Park, IL. Although he didn’t have the scrubber specifically in mind, he knew that he needed to simplify his floor-cleaning task to improve productivity. The staff at Performance Chemical steered him in the right direction—one that solved Candelario’s cleaning problems and stayed within his budget.
Mopping the hallways at the end of a long day used to be drudgery, but the new scrubber, with its variable speed traction drive system, allows Candelario’s staff a slight reprieve before going home. “The Razor 20 BT moves fast and automatically, so you don’t have to push it – it’s very light to work with,” Candelario said. “The maintenance staff members aren’t as tired at the end of the day. They can work hard all day and still have time and energy to do the floors because it makes cleaning them almost effortless.” And the automatic scrubber helps the maintenance staffers take pride in a job well done. “It’s like they are having fun with it and doing a great job at the same time,” Candelario said. “They like the way the floors look when they are done.”
